Hole, small, through mould wall. NY state prohibited sale and use of pewter icw cream moulds because of lead toxicity. Later sale of the moulds was permitted solely for ue as decoration.. To prwvwnt misuse for making ice cream it was required that a small hole be drilled through the mould wall to let distastefull freezing brine leak in. (The only method of freezing ice cream at that time.)
